Thoughts from Charcoal Valley

Soft landing... The cross country adventure is complete! We traveled without incident, from Hixton, WI to Bigfork, MT over the span of two and a half days. The rental truck performed well despite being absolutely jammed full (thanks Dale and Dan!) Louise followed in her ForeRunner with the dogs in the back. They handled the trip pretty well too.
One of our new Montana friends came over to help us unload and we got about 3/4 of the truck unloaded in a day. The next day three other friends came over to help us get the gun safe unloaded. That was one item I was dreading unloading but it went fine. We've unpacked much of our stuff but some will remain in boxes until we determine our next plan when our lease runs out next summer. We're contemplating the purchase of a parcel of land and construction of a new home. We wanted to rent for a year so we could get our feet on the ground, so to speak.
We're trying to find a balance between tasks and fun. We went huckleberry picking with some friends and got six quarts in an afternoon! Louise then converted them into the most delicious huckleberry pie known to man :-) She sure has a knack for making tasty pies!
We cut a load of firewood and have our sights set on more soon. We'll be heating with wood this winter as our primary heat source and winter comes early in the Rockies. The first thing I've noticed is that I'm kind of spoiled after burning nice dense oak all those years. This is pine country and this stuff, while light and easy to cut, is pretty quick to burn up.
We've been making many good connections at church and in the community and we continue to seek God's leading as we get settled into our new surroundings.
While we are very excited to be here, we are profoundly aware of just how blessed we were in our lives back in Wisconsin. Such wonderful friends and family! We're hoping some of you will make your way out here for a visit sometime :-)
Here's our new contact info for anyone interested:
